When a fever needs a doctor

Fever is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In an otherwise healthy adult, a short fever with a clear cause rarely needs investigation.

Come in if

• The fever lasts beyond four days
• There is breathlessness, chest pain or confusion
• You cannot keep fluids down
• There is a rash that does not fade under pressure
• You are pregnant, immunosuppressed, or above 65 with other conditions

Before you arrive

Note the pattern of temperature, any travel, and every medicine already taken — including those bought over the counter.
